The Luzhniki Rink: A Multimedia Journey
Visuals has designed and produced the multimedia content for the revamped park and skating rink at Luzhniki. Spanning an unprecedented 16,000 sq m, this rink—the largest of its kind in Russia—has instantly become a new energy hub and a powerful new attraction for citizens and visitors. The project masterfully blends active leisure with cutting-edge technology and has connection to nature, creating a seamless environment where multimedia and physical space merge into a single, "living" organism.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
  • RUSSIA'S LARGEST MULTIMEDIA RINK
  • MAPPING PROJECTION ON THE GRAND SPORTS ARENA FACADE
  • 24 IMMERSIVE INSTALLATIONS
  • 16000 SQ M TOTAL RINK AREA
SOLUTION
An immersive journey
We served as both the authors and directors of this experience. Our work includes a large-scale architectural mapping show and multimedia content for over 20 installations, such as the 16-metre Media Tree, the "Mysterious Forest," "Through the Looking Glass," the "Waterfall," the "Crystal Glade," and others.
THE MAPPING SHOW
the gift for visitors
The climax of every evening session is a spectacular mapping show. The monumental facade of the Grand Sports Arena becomes a canvas for a vibrant video stream; its walls and columns come alive, weaving narratives about the iconic landmarks of Moscow. The architecture itself is the star of the show. One of the capital's most recognisable facades is transformed into a stage for technological magic, where video projections sync perfectly with the building's architectural lighting and roof. We created four distinct video narratives: "Sport," "Emotions," "Traditions," and "Scale."

The soundtrack for "Sport" is built around an orchestral version of the legendary "Olympics-80" theme. The sound design masterfully blends the LAB orchestra with vocals by Sergey Lazarev and an arrangement by Therr Maitz. As the music plays, the facade of the arena appears to crack with ice, freeze over, and then thaw. The second chapter, "Emotions," is set to a high-energy mix of rock, rap, and pop hits. The third show delves into Russia's cultural traditions. Set to a dynamic mashup of "Moscow Never Sleeps," the Luzhniki facade transforms, displaying soaring skyscrapers and the visages of great writers and scientists. The final show, "Scale," unfolds to the powerful strains of the beloved folk song "Mother Earth".
A NEW FOCAL POINT
energy hub
The multimedia content created by Visuals has injected new energy and vitality into the legendary Luzhniki complex, turning a simple visit to the rink into a journey through a magical winter fairy tale.
NEW YEAR WISHES
"A place for miralce"
At the heart of the rink, guests discover an interactive New Year's installation designed to help them "make a miracle." Visitors can choose a personal wish for the New Year: a theme, an intention, a dream. With the push of a button, their digital message, like a living spark, shoots up to the 16-metre Media Tree. In this way, technology becomes a messenger, allowing every guest to see their own wish shining brightly in the festive swirl of lights.
TECHNOLOGY
INTERACTIVE INSTALLATIONS
As skaters glide along the park's alleys, they can control the surrounding content with simple gestures. They can even receive answers to their questions at the interactive "Alatyr" stone. To craft the sensation of a New Year's fairy tale, we employed a range of technologies, including LED screens, motion sensors, AI, and the Naked Eye 3D effect.
KEY INSTALLATIONS
The center of energy
The "Energy Cube" is an interactive installation featuring transparent displays and volumetric video content. Equipped with infrared heaters, it physically radiates warmth while showcasing abstract waves and 3D imagery. The fire effect is amplified by an under-ice screen, creating dynamic, shimmering light patterns across the rink's surface.
KEY INSTALLATIONS
The magic lake
A sprawling multimedia zone stylised as a vast lake. Its mirrored surface is brought to life through visual content activated by special buttons embedded in mineral-like stones. A simple touch triggers dynamic visuals, with the moving imagery seamlessly flowing onto a wave-shaped screen.
KEY INSTALLATIONS
"THE WATERFALL" & "THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS"
These installations create a delicate boundary between reality and magic. "The Waterfall," with its incredibly detailed imagery, responds to a visitor's presence—the frozen streams appear to thaw and flow in reaction to movement. "Through the Looking Glass" transforms the surrounding forest into a surreal fantasy, filling the air with floating, reflective water spheres. Together, they foster a sense of co-creation with the environment: the guests' very presence seems to "defrost" the winter fairy tale.
KEY INSTALLATIONS
THE MYSTERIOUS FOREST & THE CRYSTAL GLADE
The park's natural landscape gains a digital soul with the "Mysterious Forest" installation. Biomorphic structures and the LED steles of the "Crystal Glade" depict an enchanted, fantastical woodland. As visitors move, the trees awake, begin to bloom, and gently follow their path.

A NEW FORMULA FOR URBAN SPACES
The multimedia rink at Luzhniki sets a new standard for public space design. It is a powerful testament to how digital art can enrich the urban environment, become a vibrant and relevant point of attraction, and serve as the key to unlocking a location's unique cultural code.
